Airtel Equips School With Solar Power, Computer Lab

Solar panelsAIRTEL Ghana, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility will by the end of September hand over a newly equipped computer laboratory and solar power to the pupils and teachers of Som Nyame Kodru, an obscure village school in the Central Region.

The gesture is expected to   bring a new teaching and learning experience to the pupils and teachers of the school who have had to study ICT in the abstract due to lack of electricity and computers.

The daily struggles of   teachers of the School who have had to cope with limited teaching and learning material to bring some meaning to a practical subject such as ICT to his pupils is highlighted in the opening season of the award winning CSR programme ‘Airtel touching Lives ‘ season three.

“ICT is basically a practical subject but we don’t have computers for teaching even though the subject is taught in primary and JHS. We teach them theory but no practicals because we don’t have computers”, the subject teacher revealed.

Pupils of the school are bused to a neighboring town that is connected to the national grid to have access to computers.

The episode also highlights the determination of young energetic teachers of the school who are dedicated to service to their community even under difficult circumstances.

Management of Airtel Ghana said there was no better investment for any community than education, the reason the company has selected the School to extend help to.

When the projects are completed, teachers and pupils of the school would be ready to step into a new era of opportunities through ICT.

Also in this episode of the new season, Airtel touches the life of a physically challenged young lady in Kasoa in the Central Region. It is a story of a mother’s love and dedication to her disabled daughter and a priceless help from Airtel to make life more meaningful.

The new captivating episode also looks back at some of the stories from season two. In particular, for this first episode, the touching lives crew visits Emmanuel Martey, an amputee who mends shoes to keep his family of three.

Emmanuel lost his father at a very tender age and had to keep up with his uncle as an apprentice to learn the art of masonry but as fate would have it, lost his uncle in an accident that claimed one of his legs. He works hard in a challenging environment while dealing with his disability.

Airtel provided him with an artificial leg, which according to him, has brought a new drive and meaning into his life, a testimony that his wife and children attest to. The second episode of ‘Airtel Touching Lives’ airs next week.
