Labour Union Calls for An End To 2nd Tier Pension Brawl

Joe BoahenThe Local Government Workers’ Union (LGWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has urged the government to come to an agreement with the local unions in the country as soon as possible, to end the brawl in the second-tier occupational pension fund.

According to the union, the growing mistrust and suspicion surrounding management of the second-tier occupational pension fund does not augur well for industrial peace and harmony in the country.

The General Secretary of the LGWU, Joe Boahen, in a statement issued in Accra cautioned against any unilateral action by government on the second tier pension fund management.

“What we pray for is an understanding to ensure that the government sits down with the workers unions for a solution that will serve the best interest of the contributors”, he stated.

The statement appealed to the government to marshal all resources including technical expertise from Ghanaians both home and abroad to find a lasting solution to the energy problem.

It lamented: “As a nation, we cannot risk playing politics with the energy problem, because the impact on socio economic growth cannot be taken for granted”.

According to the labour union, the going power crisis was having a toll on all aspect of national life from the household to industry and service delivery sectors of the economy.

Members of the LGWU said: ” We wish to reiterate that whatever programmes initiated by any ruling government, it needs a vibrant, strong and proactive local governance structure to help speed up national progress. So building a strong decentralization system must be the focus of our political parties whether in government or opposition”.
