Accra, Ghana//- Widespread heavy rainfall swept through Accra and parts of the Greater Accra Region today, causing significant disruption to movement and business activity across the capital and its neighbouring towns.
The downpour, which began in the early hours and continued intermittently through the afternoon, led to extensive waterlogging on major roads in Accra Central, Kaneshie, Achimota, Kasoa, Madina, Tema, and Adenta.
Traffic ground to a near standstill in several locations as floodwaters pooled on key routes, making driving difficult and forcing many commuters to delay or abandon their journeys.
Public transport operators reported longer travel times and reduced passenger volumes, while pedestrians faced difficulty navigating flooded sidewalks and crossings.
Commercial activity also took a hit as the wet conditions kept shoppers away from markets and retail centres. Traders in Kaneshie Market, Makola Market, and Madina Market noted a sharp decline in foot traffic, with many vendors opting to close early to avoid damage to their goods.
Smaller shops at roadside in Kasoa, Tema Community 1, and Achimota experienced similar slowdowns, with business owners citing both reduced customer flow and challenges in restocking due to transport delays.
Authorities have not reported any major incidents or casualties as of this evening.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has indicated that unsettled weather may persist into the coming days, and residents have been advised to exercise caution while travelling and to avoid flood-prone routes where possible.
The disruption highlights the recurring challenge of drainage and urban flooding in Accra during the rainy season, with calls renewed for improved infrastructure to mitigate the impact on daily life and commerce.
