England manager Gareth Southgate has urged his team to embrace their versatility. The Three Lions edged Croatia 1-0 at Wembley Stadium on Matchday 1 thanks to a Raheem Sterling winner and Southgate feels his team’s ability to vary their style stands them in good stead.

Talking after the match, Southgate said that his team should not be “football snobs” and can feel comfortable about hitting long balls out of defence.

SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv are set to be treated to a thrilling UEFA Euro 2020 Group D match when England faces Scotland at Wembley Stadium in London on the evening of Friday 18 June 2021.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford preferred to punt the ball towards Harry Kane instead of trying to play from the back, something that resulted in a disagreement between himself and John Stones.

“We shouldn’t be football snobs,” said Southgate. “It is great to play out from the back and get to the halfway line in control of the ball, but it’s just as effective to go to the centre-forward and be in control of the ball and be able to play from there.

“The variety is important against top opposition.”

Scotland lost 2-0 to Czech Republic in their Group D opener in Glasgow and have an uphill task if they are to advance onto the knockout stages.

Neither England nor Scotland have ever reached an European Championship final.
