Airtel Ghana Joins Global To Boost Online Safer For Children

airtelAirtel Ghana has marked Safer Internet Day 2015 by announcing expanded efforts to keep the internet safe for children in Ghana.

The telecom firm joined the international cause to mark Safer Internet Day. The theme for Safer Internet Day 2015 is ‘Let’s create a better Internet together’.

In championing a better Internet, the theme recognizes the balance between encouraging students to embrace the Internet, empowering them to make the most of the positive opportunities offered online, whilst also responding to and dealing with the negative aspects of the web.

Airtel’s objective therefore is to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially amongst children and young people in Ghana.

Young people are spending hours away in their bedrooms, on the internet, without supervision or the awareness of their parents about what they are looking at or who they are talking to. Airtel is therefore urging parents to become better informed about online safety and to communicate with their children around the rules and boundaries of internet usage.

The internet has become an integral part of the everyday lives of young people in Ghana and children are among the most active and most vulnerable participants online. Protecting children in cyberspace is, therefore, clearly is our duty as a Corporate Resbonsible company.

Airtel has taken steps through its social media sites to share information and safety tips on the usuage of the internet and social media sites.

Hannah Agbozo , Director for Legal and Corporate Affairs, Airtel Ghana said, “Children are very resourceful in making the most of online services such as social networking sites and mobile phones, but many still underestimate the hidden risks of using these, from cyber-bullying to sexual grooming online. Hannah Agbozo added: “The Internet binds the whole world together. The safety of children who use it is a concern for everyone. I am therefore very happy that Airtel Ghana is associated with the rest of the world, in observering Safer Internet Day, and all year round.”

“Child online safety must be on the national agenda,” said Donald Gwira, Head of Corporate Affairs. “We must ensure that everyone is aware of the dangers for children online. And we want to promote and strengthen the many outstanding efforts that are being made around the world and in Ghana, such as the Safer Internet Programme, to limit these dangers.” African Eye News.com
