MTN Ghana Unveils Social Media Initiative to Address Community Challenges

Accra, Ghana, November 28, 2019//-MTN Ghana through its Foundation has launched another social media initiative dubbed-‘Brighten Your Community’ to help address challenges in the communities.

 The initiative is heavily driven on MTN’s social media handles, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It is a national campaign and all MTN customers are eligible to participate.

The customers are expected to choose projects starting from 2nd December 2019 to 9th December 2019 on the company’s Social Media handles for the Foundation to finance.

Launching the initiative in Accra, Acting Corporate Service Executive of MTN Ghana, Mrs Georgina Asare Fiagbenu disclosed that the MTN Ghana Foundation is devoting an amount of GHC750, 000 to be invested in the three focus areas of the Foundation-Education, Health and Economic Empowerment.

The three communities which come top at the end of the competition will be allocated GHC 250,000 each to implement the projects, she added.

“Customers are our key stakeholders and have contributed to the successes of MTN.  They are also the ultimate beneficiaries”.

Mrs Fiagbenu stressed: “Indeed when we invest in the communities we do it with the national in mind and so the benefits go beyond our customers.  For this particular campaign it is our pleasure to give the power to our customers to make the final decision”.

She further explained that most of the projects the Foundation implements come from the communities and they respond based on their linkage with the focus areas and the impact on the lives of the people.

However, this Brighten the region project encourages more participation of more people, Mrs Fiagbenu added.

Achievements

“The Foundation has contributed to the socio-economic development of Ghana through its sustainable initiatives and as a result, we have enhanced and fostered strategic partnerships through collaborations with other national/ international partners”.

With 147 projects executed, with an amount of $13 million which has impacted over four million lives, many people in rural as well as urban communities now have access to improved healthcare, thousands of expectant mothers can now deliver in hospitals close to their communities and many lives have been saved as a result of refurbishment and construction of hospital wards/blocks, donation of critical medical equipment among others.

She continued: “School children are also beneficiaries. Some school structures which used to be in dilapidated state have now been refurbished creating comfortable and safe environment for teaching and learning”.

In addition to supporting with infrastructure, scholarships have been awarded for the education of hundreds of needy but brilliant children and teachers who wish to further their education in Math and Science at the tertiary and Masters Level.

Empowering people economically, MTN supported over 200 palm oil producers with a palm oil processing facility at Juaso in the Ashanti Region.

A Shea Butter processing plant was also commissioned for Sung Suma Women’s group at Kpaguri in the Upper West Region. These projects among others aimed at improving the lives of the community members.

“In addition our very popular program “Save a life” and the award winning Heroes of Change have all been highly commended as bright, sustainable and impactful projects”, Mrs Fiagbenu said.

Appreciation to customers

She used the occasion to thank their customers for having contributed to the achievements of the organization which is resulting in continuous investments in the communities.

“With all these investments and achievements, there is still more work to be done in the communities. This is the reason customers are invited to choose a project starting 2nd December 2019 to 9th December 2019 on our Social Media handles. We believe this initiative will further delight our customers and brighten their corners”.
