MTN Ghana  is preparing feverishly to enter the country’s nascent but booming e-commerce industry, the Brand and Advertising Manager  of MTN Ghana, Eli Kpodo has disclosed.

He told online journalists in Accra at a day’s MTN Online Media Forum that work was ongoing to venture into the e-commerce industry to enable the leading telecom service provider to sell mobile phones, tablets and electronic devices among others to subscribers at affordable prices.  Mr Kpodo however did not disclose the exact date the e-commerce service will start, the newspaper gathered that the service is likely to come on-board by the close of the year.

Some telcom industry watchers welcomed the announcement by the telecom firm, saying the movie would help develop the e-commerce industry in the West African country.
But e-commerce industry players like Tonaton and Tisu, would not be happy with MTN-Ghana going into the industry and looking at the telecom firm’s track record in the evolution of mobile money in the country.
MTN Ghana’s Mobile Money platform, which was introduced five years ago to enable the unbanked population to transfer money to friends and loved ones via the mobile phone.
Currently, available statistics suggest only 20% of Ghanaians are banked, while the huge 60% are unbanked in the 24 million people’s country.
The telecom market giant has over two million active Mobile Money customers with over 6.5 million transactions recorded every month, MTN Ghana’s Executive Director for Sales and Distribution, Eric Nsarkoh said.
Speaking at the maiden MTN Online Forum for online journalists in Accra, the  Senior  Corporate Communications Manager of MTN Ghana, Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, explained that in a bid to provide 24/7 ubiquitous telecom services, the company would continue to aggressively and significantly invest in new site buildings across the country.
Mrs. Asare Fiagbenu revealed that MTN added 175 3G sites last year to its existing 1137 3G operational sites, while 120 3G sites were planned for 2014 to further enhanced performance and coverage.
To enhance speed and penetration, she further disclosed that an extensive national fibre and microwave network had been embarked upon by the company, leading to the deployment of 400km of fibre.
While metro fibre upgrades to increase access network capacity in metropolitan areas is pursuit religiously by MTN, she added.
Mrs. Asare Fiagbenu assured Ghanaians that the telecom industry giant would continue to increase investments for enhanced ICT performance and penetration in the West African second largest economy.
President of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) and renowned media practitioner,  Kwasi Gyan-Appenteng  said online media presented unique opportunities for MTN firm and brand which served as a platform of choice for breaking news – online discussions on critical issues; immediate links to social media sites; links to traditional media; press releases,  campaigns and advocacy and carried relatively large documents.
