Mining Don Grabs Doctorate Degree

General Secretary of GMWU, Prince William AnkrahThe General Secretary of the Ghana Mineworkers’ Union (GMWU), Prince William Ankrah, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree by the Day Spring Christian University of Mississippi, USA.

He was awarded the Honorary Doctorate in Humanity for his local and international recognition and philanthropic activities, at a well-attended ceremony held at the Graduate School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences of the University of Ghana in Accra, Saturday, August 30.

Mr. Ankrah, who has over two decades of labour practice was among 15 awardees, who were recognised for their exemplary roles in Ghana’s development in their various fields of endeavor.

In a citation read by the Chancellor of the Day Spring Christian University of USA, Dr. Denis Francois said: “Prince William Ankrah was born in May 1958.

“He is an industrial labour relations specialist with strong inclination for success and challenging initiatives, ability to function effectively among specialists and team mates in the disciplines of industrial relations, human resource management, organisational development and change management with position outcomes”.

He added: “Prince William Ankrah has interest in both local and international issues of thematic importance ranging from business to socio-economics, a change agent for transformational leaders and sustainable human capital initiatives, a development enthusiast who believes in the notion that emotional intelligence is what is required for the 21st century leaders in any field, believes in creating  an organizational climate that supports open communication, no-no policy and trustful corporate culture.”

Also, the board and the award committee of the University have found you (Mr. Ankrah) qualified and hereby approved you for this Doctorate degree on the bases of your local and international recognitions, philanthropic activities, your creative mind, pre-eminence in your field, your pre-eminent leadership in society, helping humanity, your investments in the kingdom of God, the continual maintenance of your numerous businesses which have employed and fed many mouths and reducing unemployment in the country. You are also a mentor and a role model to many whom you do not know, Dr. Francois stated.

Responding, Mr. Ankrah said: “For me, it is the entire leadership of GMWU that takes the award. I am just somebody whose name is linked to the award, but whatever I have done in life I have the support of my leadership. I think for me, I appreciate that and also people working in the mines have done well”.

For the youth, these are challenging times and quite frustrating but they need to expand their niche and market themselves, he advised.

The GMWU boss, therefore, urged the youth to take advantage of the newly launched Youth Enterprise Support (YES) to better their lot in the country.
