Mahama Cuts Short Berlin Trip Over Death of Former Vice President

June 29, 2018//-Former Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has cut short his trip to Germany and back to Accra following the sudden death of former Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur Friday morning.

Mr. Mahama, under who the late Amissah-Arthur served as the vice president, is currently in Berlin attending a forum on global peace and security in Africa.

National Organisater of the National Democratic Congress, Kofi Adams, who showed up at the 37 Hospital Friday morning where Mr. Arthur-Arthur was pronounced dead, told TV3 he has been in touch with Mr. Mahama on the sad news.

“On our way here, I spoke with him [John Mahama]; he is not in the country. He will be airborne by now,” Kofi Adams told TV3, an Accra-based TV station.

Meanwhile Mr. Mahama who appeared to have lost for words tweeted to express shock at the demise of his 2016 running mate, describing the news as “very sad”.

The 67-year-old who was also a former governor of the Bank of Ghana was said to have collapsed at the Air Force Gym at the Burma Camp in Accra Friday morning while undergoing his routine exercise.

He was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His demise has shocked thousands of Ghanaians including President Nana Akufo-Addo and his vice, Mahamudu Bawumia who have taken to social media to express their sadness.

“The details of this sad news will be announced by the family later,” Mr. Adams said on TV3, indicating that the National Democratic Congress was in a mourning state.

Meanwhile some key members of the party have started thronging the home of the late economist-cum-politician at Ridge in Accra where his wife and one of his two children were spotted.

He said one could hear people crying from a distance, saying “the cry from the house is telling”.

“The family has not spoken officially on this yet but from indication, it is getting clear that his Excellency Paa Kwesi Amissa-Arthur, the former vice president has passed on,” according to the TV station.

Mr. Amissah Arthur served as the vice president of Ghana between August 2012 and January 2017.
