HACKERS are making the most of the raging Ebola virus to launch phishing attacks on unsuspecting victims.
As the disease spreads to more countries and cities in the region, leading cyber security firm, Cyberoam warned that hackers were using news and informations about the disease to hack into people’s computers.
The firm said its findings revealed that hundreds of people might have fallen victim to the new hacking scheme.
It said that in lieu of the Ebola epidemic and as with most phishing emails, the hackers sent emails to unsuspecting users who opened them, clicked on the links or even shared them with others.
Kalpesh Devmurari, representative of Cyberoam, reported that these emails seemed genuine and from a legitimate source like friends, colleagues, thus increasing the chances of a victim opening them.
The Ebola virus has killed more than 1 500 people in the region, with Nigeria one of several countries affected.
