Uganda Airlines’ inaugural Flight to Ghana

Accra, Ghana//-Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, has welcomed the inaugural flight of Uganda Airlines to Ghana, describing the new service as a boost for the country’s aviation sector and reaffirming the government’s commitment to investing in aviation infrastructure.

The Ugandan national carrier began operations at the Accra International Airport on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, with four-times-weekly services linking Entebbe, Lagos, and Accra.

The launch expands the airline’s African network and adds Accra to its list of destinations, giving travellers another option for journeys between Uganda and Ghana, as it seeks to strengthen trade, tourism, and business links between East and West Africa.

Speaking at the inaugural flight ceremony, Mr Nikpe said the government would continue to invest in aviation infrastructure to strengthen Ghana’s position as a preferred destination for international travel.

Managing Director of the Ghana Airports Company Limited, Mrs Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, said the airline’s entry into Ghana’s aviation market demonstrates the country’s growing appeal as a destination for aviation investments.

“The arrival of Uganda Airlines in Ghana represents a significant milestone in the growing relationship between the two countries. Beyond expanding travel options for passengers, this new service is expected to enhance connectivity, stimulate tourism and culture, facilitate trade and strengthen economic cooperation between Ghana and Uganda,” she said.

Chief Executive of Uganda Airlines, Mr Girma Wake, said the airline’s operations in Ghana would strengthen air connectivity between West and East Africa, making travel between the regions more accessible.

The flights will stop in Lagos, Nigeria, before continuing to Accra, rather than operate non-stop. The service will use a Boeing 737-800 wet-leased from Ethiopian Airlines. Under a wet lease, the aircraft is supplied with its crew, maintenance, and insurance by the lessor, allowing a carrier to expand its network without enlarging its own fleet.

For travellers between Uganda and Ghana, the new service provides an additional option alongside existing connections offered by airlines routing passengers through Nairobi and Addis Ababa. The new route is expected to enter a market served by established airlines, and could intensify competition on airfares between the two African regions, widening the choice for passengers.

Limited air connectivity remains a major obstacle to Africa’s economic integration, forcing travellers to rely on indirect connections and transit stops when moving between countries.

For Uganda Airlines, the Accra service is part of a broader effort to build a commercially sustainable network while increasing Entebbe’s role in connecting African markets with international destinations.

The service is also expected to facilitate business travel and create opportunities for stronger commercial relationships between Ghana, Uganda, and other markets along the route.
