Ghana’s National Airline Task force Close to Completing Work

Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe

Ghana’s Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe has said the task force established to spearhead plans for Ghana’s national airline is nearing completion of its work, signalling progress towards the country’s return to the aviation industry.

He disclosed this at the launch of Uganda Airlines’ Accra–Entebbe service on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Mr Nikpe said President John Dramani Mahama was determined to ensure Ghana participated more actively in the aviation industry rather than merely investing in airport infrastructure without operating a national carrier.

“His Excellency the President is thinking that we cannot have beautiful airports and connect our airports to other airports without participating in that industry of aviation or flying people,” he said.

According to the minister, the national airline task force is almost done with its work, with further developments expected soon.

Mr Nikpe said the proposed carrier would support movement across the continent by connecting production centres to markets, markets to factories, and workplaces to tourism destinations.

He added that improved air connectivity could help facilitate the movement of people and support economic activity across Africa.

“And so very soon, the task force [national airline task force] is almost done with their work. And very soon, we will join Uganda Airlines to be able to move our people from producing centres to the marketplaces, from the marketplaces to the factories, and from workplaces to other tourism sites, so that Africans will have that kind of free movement within our own [continent],” he stated.

Ghana previously operated Ghana Airways, which was liquidated several years ago. The government is now considering reviving the country’s presence in the industry through a new national airline.

The minister’s remarks come as Ghana strengthens its aviation links with other African countries, with the launch of Uganda Airlines’ Accra–Entebbe service providing another connection between the two markets.

In a related development, President John Dramani Mahama has expressed optimism that Ghana’s national airline will resume operations before the end of his tenure.

Speaking at the Russian University of Transport, where he received an honorary doctorate, President Mahama said efforts were underway to revamp the country’s national airline.

“And even as I speak, we are working on revamping our cherished national airline, which is the defunct Ghana Airways. And as I said, it’s my hope that before I leave office, we will have Ghana Airways back in the air.” 3news
