Ghana: IFEJ Launches 6th Edition of Flamingo Awards for Journalists

IFEJ Awards 2019 launched

Accra, Ghana, August 13, 2019//-The Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ), today launched its sixth edition of the IFEJ Flamingo Awards for business and financial journalists in Ghana.

The 2019 edition is on the theme: ‘Towards Agribusiness and Sustainable Development Goals’.

This year, the ultimate winner must pick up the best in agribusiness reporting and any other category,” the President of IFEJ, Rayborn Bulley explained at the launch in Accra.

Journalists, particularly financial and economic reporters who write comprehensive and accurate business news, are encouraged to enter the IFEJ Flamingo Awards.
Stories written from 1st July 2018 to 30th June 2019 are all qualified for the awards but the final selection is depended on the awards committee jury. Submission of articles for the awards began from 13th August 18 to 13th September, this year, according to the Director of Programmes at IFEJ, Ms Naa Torshie Torto.

 She added that the submission of stories could be done at the IFEJ office located on the second floor of Ga Presbytery, Jubilee House at Kuku Hill Osu, Accra. Interested journalists can also download the form(s) on the IFEJ website.

The IFEJ is a non-profit organisation that seeks to provide qualitative analysis of the economic sector while offering necessary ammunition for policy redirection through write-ups by members.

The Head of Jury, Prof. John Gatsi said the awards would focus on key areas such as originality, accuracy, quality and excellent communication.

He added: “We also will focus on quality and that will be the overall presentation of the story, the planning, angle and arrangement of the story”.

The IFEJ awards which are slated for January 2020 would award journalists in the following categories; 

  1. Overall Best Business and Financial Journalist (Ultimate winner)
  2. Best Business/Manufacturing Feature/News story
  3. Best Finance Feature/News story
  4. Best Business of Health feature/News
  5. Best in local Economy feature/News
  6. Best Development feature/News story
  7. Best Agribusiness feature/News story
  8. Best Natural Resource feature/News story
  9. Best Informational and communication Technology feature/News story
  10. Best Tourism Feature/News story

Launching the awards, the Member of Parliament for Twifo Atti Morkwa and Vice Chair for Food, Agric and Cocoa Affairs for the Select Committee of Parliament, Abraham Dwuma Odoom, said the country could feed itself if it pays greater attention to the agric sector.

He used the occasion to appeal to journalists to write more on the value chain, stressing: “The value chain concept is the only solution to our food security”.

Dr Kwadwo Tutu, an economist and chairman of the launch described the theme of the awards as timely and apt.

He said: “If you look at the SDGs outcomes, we in Africa must be weeping. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) are doing well while Africa is lagging behind”.

Appreciations 

The President of IFEJ, Rayborn Bulley took the opportunity to thank the World Bank for believing in IFEJ first and supporting the ultimate award winner to cover the annual IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC, USA.

He added: “Our special thanks go to the GNPC for being the platinum partner for two years running. We also grateful to the Ghana Stock Exchange, Ghana Chamber of Mines, MTN Ghana, Melcom Group of Companies”, among others.

Mr Daniel Koomson – Veteran Journalist and Retired Communication Manager Adb;

Mr. Felix Dela Klutse – A practicing senior financial journalist, editor, public relations consultant, multiple award winner;

Ms Charity Acquah – a veteran journalist, Communication expert and consultant with corporate bodies and international organizations; and

Mr Francis Kokutse – A practicing senior journalist of international repute, communication and media consultant and trainer of trainers
