Accra, March 27, 2018//-Ghana has beefed up IT security at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA), following the inauguration of seven biometric e-Gates system, a total integrated e-Immigration system that is capable of regulating entry into and exit from the country.

The e-Gates are expected to serve as an automatic border control solution and ease peak traffic workload for immigration by registered travelers. The e-Gates allow travelers to use their passports to automatically enter and exit the country

The focus of the e-Immigration system is the provision of an end-to-end integration of Boarder Control operation, Permit and Visa Management Systems, Business Processes Including document and record management among others.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister for Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu Ekufu said: “If you’re using a fake document it can be picked up by the system. It improves our general security and also helps with our data collection efforts so we can profile people and keep track of them better.”

The role of such systems in keeping dangerous elements out of the country, according to her is too paramount. So, the systems would improve security at various points of entry.

“It is part of the digitalization agenda of the government. So now you have total integrated e-immigration system. You even have criminals on the watch list and the stop list stored on the system. So if you are travelling under the identity of these criminals you would be picked up by the system.”
