November 6, 2019//-The Member of Parliament for the Effutu consistency in the Central Region, Alexander Afenyo Markin has called on the Governing Council of the University of Education, Winneba, to reinstate former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke and five others after an investigative report exonerated them from any wrong doing.
The MP in February 2017, petitioned the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) through the Minister for Education for an investigation into the steewardship of some six persons following a series of complaints by some of the lecturers and staff of the school led by the then Pro Vice Chancelor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful Broni.
The six persons accused included: Prof. Mawutor Avoke, Vice Chancelor; Dr. Theophilius Senyo Ackorlie, Finance Officer; Mr. Frank Owusu Boateng, Deputy Finance Officer; Ms. Sena Dake, Internal Auditor; Mary Dzimey, Acting Head of Procurement; and Ingeneer Daniel Tetteh, Acting Deputy Director of Works and Physical Development.
However, the outcome of the investigative report by EOCO has rather turned out to exonerate the accused persons, Prof. Avoke and the rest.
In view of this, Mr. Afenyo-Markin in a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Governing Council dated October 24, 2019, has requested for the implementation of the findings of the EOCO report in the interest of justice and fairness.
“I have read in detail the report of EOCO and it appears regretably that Rev. Fr. Prof. Afful Broni who was the lead complainant of procurement irregularities and persistently edged my office to pursue same was indicted.
” Whereas his boss, Prof. Mawutor Avoke and Finance Officer, Dr. Theophilius Senior Ackorlie were completely exonerated by EOCO of any wrong doing.
“I expect that in the interest of justice and fairness, your council upon receipt of this report will do the needful and take appropriate action. I need to reiterate that Ghanaians are following the events of the University of Education, Winneba keenly,” he stated in the letter.
