Accra, Ghana//-The Women’s wing of Barry Callebaut Ghana and Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Company, Cocoa Ladies have made donations worth thousands of cedis to two institutions. The donations are part of the group’s strategy to empower women and children across Africa.
The donations were made to the female inmates of the Kumasi Central Prison in the Ashanti Region by the Nyonkopa Cocoa Ladies, while the Tema Cocoa Ladies made their donation to the Ark Foundation at Haatso.
Receiving the items, the officer in charge at the Kumasi Central Prisons, ASP Fausta Ekellah expressed her appreciation to Cocoa Ladies from Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Company and encouraged other corporate organizations to emulate the gesture.
“We usually receive donations from organizations but this gesture from Barry Callebaut has really touched our hearts, I will however appeal for further support for medical care and start-up equipment for our inmates to learn a trade in dressmaking, beading and hairdressing to help them easily reintegrate into society’’.
Items donated by the Nyonkopa team included food items such as yam, plantain, cassava, beans, rice, oil, toiletries among others. The Cocoa Ladies were later given an opportunity to interact with the female inmates who showcased their handiworks such as beads, keyholders, necklaces, bags and other artifacts.
Cocoa Ladies from Barry Callebaut also donated items such as detergents, sanitizers, water, tissues, food items among others to the Ark Foundation at Haatso.
The items were received by an official of the foundation, Ms. Annabelle, who thanked Barry Callebaut and Cocoa Ladies for the gesture.
