Airtel Supports Quality Education In Farming Community

Lucy Quist, Airtel Ghana MDACCESS to high quality education is key to sustainable social and economic development of any country, but for the pupils of Dubila, a farming community in the Upper East Region of Ghana, inadequate infrastructure threatens their access to quality education.

Pupils in this community study under trees while others walk more than four kilometers to gain access to primary education.

Four years ago, the Bolga Municipal Assembly began the construction of a three unit class room block for the Dubila Community to serve as an initial infrastructure for basic education with plans to build a six class room block later for the community to ensure that at least children complete Junior High School.

Due to limited funds, this has not been made possible. As a result, after completing primary three, the pupils are forced to study under nearby trees or trek long distances to continue their basic education.

The community through its own initiative started a two classroom mud structure to salvage the situation but this has not been enough to change the fortunes of the school.

Airtel Ghana as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility Programme ‘Airtel Touching Lives’ has offered to complete and furnish the three class room block started by the Assembly.

Management of Airtel believes that with the support, children in Dubila would have a more conducive environment to study and to have a fair chance in life against all their other competitors across the country.

Moses Abilba Assemblyman for the Area is optimist that the gesture would go a long way to improve teaching and learning in the community.

“I am very delighted for the support because it will help improve teaching and learning in the community and would inspire a lot of children to go to school”, he said

In episode five of ‘Airtel Touching Lives’, the team visited Sylvia, a hearing and visually impaired student at the Mampong special school for the deaf who is having an excitingly new   learning experience on her special computer provided by Airtel Touching Lives in the previous season.

According to Sylvia’s teacher, teaching has been made easier for them and for Sylvia especially as she now has unlimited access to information on the internet with her equipment.

Sylvia is also able to communicate with her friends on social media platform, Facebook using her special equipment.
