African Women Leaders Gather to Imagine the World of Tomorrow

November 19, 2020//-The third, fully online edition of WFC The Summit – initiated by the AFRICA CEO FORUM – will bring together 300 major African women leaders on 24 November to discuss this year’s theme: ‘Imagine tomorrow, change today’.

Could the Covid crisis break the momentum that has seen African women gradually gain a foothold in high-level positions since the turn of the century? Does it represent an opportunity for companies to start anew with a more sustainable growth model? Which business sectors stand to benefit?

Featuring some of the continent’s most prominent female leaders today, including Stephanie Von Friedeburg, Interim Managing Director of IFC, Daphne Mashile-Nkosi, Executive Chairperson of Kalagadi Manganese and Chairperson of the Women Working for Change initiative, Ibukun Awosika, Chairman of First Bank Nigeria, Graça Machel, Founder of the Graça Machel Trust, and many more, participants will discuss the fallout of the health crisis on Africa’s private sector as well as their role in the post-Covid order.

“With Africa set to experience an economic recession of historic proportions, the continent’s women leaders should take part in enriching the discussion about the global challenges to come and reflect on the steps that need to be taken to give women their rightful place in spearheading change”,  Amir Ben Yahmed, founder and president of the AFRICA CEO FORUM, said.

“IFC sees gender equality as a social and moral imperative—as well as an economic necessity. The COVID-19 crisis has highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of developing economies and is helping concentrate minds on how they can become more resilient and inclusive.

Post-COVID recovery strategies must, therefore, include a serious focus on supporting—and listening to—women in the private sector, whether they are entrepreneurs, managers, board members, or CEOs. Jumoke Jagun-Dokunmu, regional director for Eastern Africa, IFC, said.
