October 30, 2020//-Boxing fans with DStv can look forward to some world-class boxing action this weekend, with OleksandrUsyk v Dereck Chisora and Gervonta Davis v Leo Santa Cruz headlining two major cards in London and San Antonio on Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November.
In England on Saturday night, Zimbabwe-born Brit Derek Chisora will be looking to derail the ambitions of former undisputed cruiserweight champion OleksandrUsyk, who is looking to clean up the heavyweights after dominating the lower weight class.
It will be just his second outing at heavyweight and although he carries a slick arsenal of skills, it’s his ability to absorb heavyweight power that will be the most dominant feature of this bout.
Chisora refused to trash talk his rival: “This guy [Usyk] is a good guy. He won a gold medal. He won everything he was given [in the cruiserweight division]. For me to say anything bad about this guy makes me look stupid. He’s done it all. He’s a good fighter. He’s a good athlete.”
Chisora explained how he had prepared for his opponent in sparring, who has not yet convinced at his new weight, but who brings with him technique and speed from the division below.
“All I needed to get was southpaws, for the way they stand and the way they move their feet. The game is in play because the punches are going to land,” he said.
The Brit continued: “It’ll be a shock to him. If you’ve got power ready, you’re good. We’re going to see if he’s got the power to bother any heavyweight. When I land my punches he’ll know he’s been hit.”
A few hours later on Sunday morning, in Texas, Gervonta Davis and Leo Santa Cruz will fight for the WBA super-featherweight and WBA lightweight championships in a rare clash in boxing history in which world titles in two weight classes will be at stake.
Other notable instances of two-weight title bouts in recent boxing history are the 1988 Sugar Ray Leonard-Donny Lalonde fight for the light-heavyweight and super-middleweight titles, and the 2014 Floyd Mayweather-Marcos Maidana rematch for the super-welterweight and welterweight championships.
Davis is in fact a protégé of Mayweather, although completely different in style: the southpaw is a dynamic puncher who suffocates opponents through his high-pressure offence.
Mayweather has stated that he wants to see Davis surpass his own perfect 50-0 career record: “This young man right here, a natural born superstar. I would say I’m the god of this s***, I’m the don of this s***, I’m the LeBron of this s***. But the ultimate goal is to get him to surpass me.”
