Accra, Ghana//-The African Editors Forum (TAEF) today called on the Djibouti authorities to immediately clarify Micah Reddy, a South African journalist, and his Djiboutian fixer, Kooki Mahmoud’s whereabouts.
In a press release issued and signed by its Vice President, Emmanuel K Dogbevi also asked the authorities to confirm their well-being.
The release again called on the authorities to launch a prompt, transparent investigation into their disappearance, and keep their families, colleagues and employers fully and promptly informed.
“TAEF is also calling on the African Union Commission to impress upon the Djibouti authorities to be transparent about the whereabouts of the two men”, the release said.
Reddy is both a British and South African citizen, and both London and Pretoria have been informed since he went missing. Authorities in Djibouti have not responded so far to media inquiries about Reddy, according to the press release.
TAEF is gravely concerned about Reddy and Mahmoud’s safety. Journalists should be free to travel everywhere in the world without any form of restrictions, it stated.
Reddy, who is the Africa coordinator for the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), and Mr Mahmoud lost contact with friends and colleagues in Djibouti City on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at approximately 1 pm local time.
Neither of them has been in contact or reachable since that time.
Reddy, who was staying at the Escale International Hotel in Djibouti City before he went missing, was not reporting on Djibouti issues.
