Accra, Ghana//-MTN Ghana today rejected recent claims by Clydestone Ghana Plc alleging the unauthorised use of intellectual property linked to the development of mobile money service.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, who broke his silence on the matter at the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) Facts Behind the Figures session in Accra, was confident that the case is without merit.
He went further to assure customers and investors of MTN Ghana’s mobile money subsidiary, MobileMoney Fintech LTD, that the mobile business is safe.
Mr Blewett also pledged to contest the case in the law court to its fullest completion.
The CEO of the largest listed company on the GSE revealed that they did not make any financial provision for Clydestone’s lawsuit after assessing the claims.
Mr Blewett’s comment follows a writ of summons and statement of claim filed by Clydestone against MTN Ghana, MTN Group and Mobile Money Fintech Limited at the Commercial Division of the Accra High Court.
Clydestone is alleging that work it was commissioned to undertake in 2007—including a commercial and operational framework for a mobile money business—was subsequently used without authorisation or compensation.
Clydestone which described itself as “a premier technology and financial services company headquartered in Accra, Ghana” and became the first indigenous IT company to be listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange on May 19, 2004, is seeking declarations, damages and equitable remedies over what it described as proprietary intellectual property, confidential commercial information and operational methodology developed during the engagement.
Mr Blewett told investors during the session on the performance of the company’s first-half (H1) 2026, that MTN Ghana had been formally served with the documents which the company is ever-ready to challenge at the court.
In his own words: “MTN Ghana has been served with a writ of summons and statement of claim relating to Clydestone’s alleged role in the initiation of mobile money services in Ghana, concerning matters that date back almost 20 years.”
MTN Ghana, according to him, had reviewed the matter and did not accept the claims by Clydestone, insisting that “MTN Ghana does not accept the claims made, considers them to be without merit and will contest these proceedings fully.”
Telecoms and fintech industry watchers are waiting to see the commencement of the case.
