MTN Ghana Foundation will be celebrating World Teachers’ Day on 5th October (tomorrow) with a social media campaign to reward teachers.
This year’s World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated worldwide under the theme ‘Empowering teachers, building sustainable societies,’ and MTN Ghana Foundation is taking the opportunity to encourage members of the public to recognize teachers who made a positive impact on their lives and reward them.

The general public is being invited to participate in the activity by making submissions on social media describing their best teachers on video or in 50 compelling words. The entries are to be submitted on MTN social media pages (Facebook – MTN Ghana, Instagram – @mtnghana and Twitter – @mtnghana). On Twitter, the general public will be required to describe their favourite teachers and add the hashtag #worldteachersday.

Entries will be shortlisted and winners selected by a panel of judges. MTN will present awards to the top two teachers and their nominators. The two winners will receive a laptop and a 4G modem each and their nominators will receive a Samsung A7 and Huawei P8 Lite device respectively.

The MTN Ghana Foundation’s support for World Teachers’ Day celebrations is an initiative to support efforts being made by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to create awareness of the significant role teachers play in education and human development.
Commenting on the celebrations, the Corporate Services Executive of MTN, Mrs. Cynthia Lumor, said, “Teachers play a key role in building human capital for national development and in creating a knowledge based society; they play an important role in all aspects of human lives. We must support such initiatives to empower and motivate teachers.”

Apart from celebrating World Teachers’ Day, MTN Foundation has supported members of the teaching profession in diverse ways over the past eight years and has taken several initiatives aimed at motivating and empowering teachers.

In 2015, MTN Ghana Foundation launched the Teacher Improvement Award Programme, a scholarship scheme to financially assist teachers who wish to upgrade their education at the first Degree or Masters level. In the maiden edition, 20 teachers were selected, with nine being supported to pursue first degree programs and eleven pursuing Masters Programs. The second edition of the Teacher Improvement Award is currently ongoing and at the shortlisting stage. The Foundation has also supported the National Best Teacher Awards scheme in the past, providing the prize package for the second position from 2007 to 2014.

World Teachers’ Day takes place every year on October 5 and is celebrated in over 100 countries and spearheaded by the UNESCO. World Teachers Day is celebrated with the aim of highlighting the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels, and to promote international standards for the teaching profession.
