MTN Ghana Eases School Fees Payment Burden

MTN LogoMTN Ghana has added another innovative service onto its robust and resilient MTN Mobile Money platform which allows parents and guardians to pay their wards school fees with ease.

The service which was launched in Accra today enables subscribers of the network to pay school fees for their wards irrespective of their geographical locality provided there is a connectivity.

It affords parents the opportunity to pay fees of their wards without being physically present in their schools and reduce the risks associated with traveling to pay fees.

The service-dubbed Mobile Money School Fees Payment already 30 Senior High Schools (SHSs) and three tertiary institutions from the southern part of Ghana is also expected to enroll more schools from the other part of the West African country.

The Sales and Distribution Executive of MTN Eric Nsarkoh who was joined by some heads of the SHSs to launch the service said the introduction of the service was in response to the growing demand for convenient payment options for school fees in the country.

That he said was why MTN in collaboration with its technology partners and banks, had designed the school fee services to give parents the ease and convenience of paying their wards fees from the comfort of their homes and offices without any hassle.

Mr Nsarkoh added: “We have also provided the school with a reliable platform to be able to monitor all transactions that have happened and be able to get the funds settled at their preferred bank account for easy reconciliation.”

He said subscribers of the MTN Mobile Money system are already able to pay their electricity, DSTV, GOtv bills and make transactions online.

The MTN Mobile Money platform which recent celebrated its five anniversary has over one million active subscribers across the length and breadth of the country.

Mr Nsarkoh therefore used the occasion to encourage people to register for Mobile Money and sign up to all the services that were available to enjoy the convenience it brings.

Touching on how the service work, the Director of IT Consortium, Ebow Anamoah Mensah, said schools registered on the payment service must have unique pin numbers and identification number for each student.

While schools registered on the school fees payment service must also have unique pin numbers and identification numbers respectively, he added.

He said notifications would be sent in the form of messages to the mobile devices of the subscribers anytime a transfer is made, stressing with 10,000 mobile money agents across the country, subscribers would be able to transfer money with ease.

Accountant at the Edinaman Senior High School Peter Essun said since the school adopted of the school fees payment service it had significantly contributed to the payment of school fees and improved proper accounts in the school.

The President of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Samuel Ofori Adjei behalf of his colleagues lauded the MTN initiative and urged all schools to sign on to the service, emphasising “Ghana can’t afford to crawl while others are running”.

The launch of the service also saw the introduction of MTN’s Back to School Promotion which will reward subscribers and schools who patronize the service.
