MMFL CEO Calls For Ghana’s Digital Finance Agenda To Move Beyond Access

Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL), Shaibu Haruna

Accra, Ghana//-The Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech LTD (MMFL), Shaibu Haruna, has called for Ghana’s digital finance agenda to move beyond access and focus more deliberately on improving customers’ financial health and long-term well-being.

Speaking during a panel discussion on “Mobile Money, Agency Banking and Digital Payments” at the inaugural Ecobank–Joy Business Financial Dialogue Series, Shaibu said the next phase of digital finance must deliver practical solutions that help people save, borrow, invest and plan more securely.

The dialogue, held under the theme “Driving Financial Inclusion Through Digital Transformation,” brought together regulators, financial institutions, fintech companies and industry leaders to explore how technology can expand access and strengthen economic participation.

“MobileMoney has gone beyond simply bringing people into the financial ecosystem. The focus has shifted from financial inclusion to financial health and financial well-being. We are building solutions that address customers’ real needs,” he said.

He said MMFL’s recent partnerships with IC Wealth, Misika, Coronation and Flexi Pension reflect this shift by giving customers access to a broader range of financial tools, including investment, credit and pension solutions. He added that the industry must deepen adoption by engaging customers continuously, understanding their pain points and building trust.

“The key lesson is simple: involve the entire ecosystem, engage customers continuously, understand their pain points and build solutions that solve those problems. At the same time, we must continue building trust in digital financial services,” he added.

Other panellists reinforced the need for stronger collaboration across Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.

Akosua Blay, Chief Business Officer of Ghana Interbank Payment and Settlement Systems (GHIPSS), said interoperability has been critical to the sector’s growth, enabling banks, fintechs, payment service providers and mobile money operators to connect more seamlessly through shared infrastructure.

Jacqueline Dufie Mpare, Managing Director of Pan African Savings and Loans Ltd, said digital tools are also helping financial institutions reach more customers, improve profiling and make better lending decisions, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The comments come ahead of the launch of MMFL’s Fintech Lab, an innovation platform designed to bring together fintechs, developers, partners and ecosystem stakeholders to co-create practical digital finance solutions that respond to customers’ evolving needs and accelerate Ghana’s digital financial transformation.

The inaugural Financial Dialogue Series featured discussions on banking, fintech, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and digital payments.
