Malta Gov’t: Malta-Ghana Visa Waiver Agreement Doesn’t Cover All Ghanaians

Valletta , Malta, March 29, 2019/ — Malta’s Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Trade Promotion has issued a press release to correct the misinformation being peddled by some government officials  that the recently announced Malta-Ghana visa waiver policy covers all Ghanaian passport holders.

“On 26 March 2019, Malta and Ghana signed an Agreement on the Waiver of Visa Requirements for Holders of Diplomatic and Official/Service Passports.

The agreement, waivering the requirement for a visa only for holders of such passports, will enter into force following the notification by both parties (Malta and Ghana) of the completion of the necessary national legal procedures. This process is yet to be concluded”, according to the press release.

“It is therefore clear that Schengen regulations and the requirement of a visa for Ghanaian nationals, holders of normal passports, to travel to and enter into Malta, is still in force”, it stated.

On Tuesday, 26 March, 2019, when the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, paid a day’s official visit to Malta, where he held bilateral talks with his Maltese counterpart President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca signed five Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of partnerships between the two countries.

The agreements between the governments of Ghana and Malta are:  MoU on Medicine; MoU on Bilateral Air Services; MoU on the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to Income Taxes on Income;  MoU on Tourism; and  (5) Joint Commission for Bilateral Co-operation.

Speaking at a luncheon held in his honour, President Akufo-Addo indicated that these agreements “will serve as a strong launchpad for more dynamic and vibrant engagements in key sectors of our respective economies.”
