Major Parliamentary Winners and Losers of Ghana Election

Accra, Ghana, December 6, 2020//-Ghana’s 2020 elections have recorded major winners and losers in the parliamentary arena as results trickle in across the length and breadth of the West African country.

The incumbent Member of Parliament of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has won the Odododiodoo constituency for the third term.

Out of 254 polling stations from a total of 258 polling stations certified by the EC, Mr Vanderpuye had polled a total of 40,502 seats as his closest contender Nii Lantey Bannerman polled a total of 34, 289.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye was arrested as part of a joint military-police operation Tuesday dawn after some skirmishes in the constituency.

The lawmaker and parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the NDC was picked up alongside his wife, daughter and about fifteen other men who were with him over alleged shootings in the area.

Mr Vanderpuye had earlier told GhOne TV exclusively that the police broke into a hotel he was working from and pumped tear gas into his room.

According to his lawyer Lesliw Anim, he has been taken to the Central police station in Accra.

Reports indicate that Nii Lante Bannerman’s men attacked him in his hotel but he has rather been arrested.

Similarly, the Korle Klottey parliamentary NDC’s Dr Zanetor Rawlings polled 39,193 to retain her seat beating her contender Prince Appiah Debrah who polled of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) who garnered 31,239 votes.

Also the incumbent NDC parliamentary candidate for the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency in the Eastern Region, Alex Adomako retained his seat for a third term.

He polled 6,212 as against 5480 to beat the NPP candidate Joseph Owusu popularly known as Odenkyem who is also the District Chief Executive for Sekyere Afram Plains.

In his victory speech, the soft spoken MP commended his senior bro Dr. Kwabena Duffor, Drobonso Constituency executives and the electorate for their support.

He assured the constituents that he will continue to give them the necessary support in the area of development.

Additionally, the opposition NDC has recaptured the Akwatia Parliamentary seat in the Eastern Region from the governing NPP.

A 51-year-old businessman, Henry Boakye Yiadom alias Okoyo of the NDC defeated his sole contender Ernest Kumi of the NPP with 19,899 votes as against 18,742 garnered by the latter to win back the seat for the NDC.

In 2016, a hairdresser by Profession-Mercy Adu Gyamfi Bello, popularly known as Ama Sey defeated then Member of Parliament Baba Jamal Ahmed to become the MP.

However, her bid to seek re-election for a second term was truncated when she lost the parliamentary primaries to Ernest Yaw Kumi, a result she contested and called for recount but was not granted.

Whereas majority of the NPP supporters voted for the presidential candidate Akufo-Addo who garnered 21,758 votes but in the parliamentary election they voted for the NDC Candidate.

The lawmaker who hails from the Upper East region beat his major contender James Maurice Abakisi.

Likewise, incumbent NDC MP for Bolgatanga Central Isaac Adongo also beat his major contender Rex Simeon Azar by 64.5% against 34.9%.

The incumbent Member of Parliament for the Builsa North constituency James Agalga has retained the seat for the opposition NDC.

Furthermore, legal practitioner and Parliamentary Candidate for the NDC, Francis Xavier Sosu, has snatched the Madina seat from the incumbent Sadique Boniface Abubakar of the NPP.

Sosu polled 62, 127 votes while Boniface Abubakar managed to poll 46, 985 votes.

In the Ningo-Prampram constituency, incumbent MP Sam George has won again garnering the highest ever vote in the constituency. He polled 48,869 votes against NPP’s candidate who polled 19,911 votes.

The Deputy Minister of Defence, Major (rtd) Derek Oduro, who is also the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkoranza North has lost his seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Mr Joseph Kwasi Mensah.

Mr Mensah obtained 15,124 votes to beat the incumbent MP, who managed to poll 10,978 votes.

The Parliamentary candidates of the GFP had four votes, GCPP had nine, APC pulled 16 votes, LPG had 21, PNC had 22, PPP managed to garner five votes, NDP also pulled five and the independent candidate had 35 votes.

The total ballot cast was 26,614 of which 25,619 were valid while 995 votes were rejected.

The first deputy minority chief whip of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Ahmed Ibrahim, has for the fourth successive time defeated NPP’s Joe Danquah to maintain his seat in the Banda Constituency.

The incumbent MP first defeated Mr. Danquah in 2008 to unseat him in the then Tain/Banda Constituency.

He has since remained MP after the creation of the Banda Constituency in 2012.

Ahmed Ibrahim amassed 8,276 against Joe Danquah’s 8,195.

Provisional results from the Tempane Constituency in the Upper East Region show that the incumbent New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tempane and a Deputy Attorney General, Mr Joseph Dindiok Kpemka has failed to retain the seat.

He polled 16,462 votes against 20,939 votes garnered by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate, Miss Lydia Akanvariba Lamisi.

Meanwhile, former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Mr Kofi Adams, has won the Buem Constituency seat in the Oti Region.

Mr Adams won 18,528 votes against the NPP’s Lawrence Kwame Aziale who had 6,843 votes.

Cape Coast South retained National Democratic Congress’s Kweku Ricketts-Hagan as Member of Parliament but gave Nana Akufo Addo a win over NDC’s John Mahama.

The incumbent MP polled 21,118 while the Chief Executive of the CCMA, Mr Ernest Arthur of the NPP polled 19,714.

The incumbent Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has retained his seat.

He beat the New Patriotic Party’s Alhaji Alidu Seidu with 51,694 votes.

Alhaji Seidu who went into the election with a divided front polled 30,950 votes.

The wife of former Member of Parliament (MP) for Mfantseman was declared winner of the seat by Electoral Commission (EC) at Saltpond Tuesday morning.

The District Electoral officer, Mr. Owusu Ansah declared Ophelia Mensah Hayford of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) winner over two other candidates from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM). reports Emmanuel J.K. Arthur.

She obtained 36,091 votes representing 51.83% while her close contender, NDC’s James Essuon gained 32,379 votes representing 46.76%.

Meanwhile in the hotly contested Ayawaso West-Wuogon constituency, Popular Movie Star John Dumelo lost his bid to go to Parliament after he was defeated by Lydia Alhassan of the NPP.

Lydia Alhassan polled 39,8521 while Dumelo garnered 37,778 votes.

Surprisingly, The New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary Candidate, George Andah, has lost the Awutu Senya West Parliamentary seat to the sister of Hannah Tetteh, Gizella Tetteh-Agbotui of the National Democratic Congress.

Mr Andah who is a Deputy Minister of Communications was the incumbent after snatching the seat from Hannah Tetteh in 2016.

He served only one term.

According to the provisional results, Gizella Tetteh polled 32,708 while George Andah polled 29,832.

Ahead of the polls, the NPP MP had made a passionate appeal to supporters to change the Awutu Senya West narrative of a one-term MP by giving him another four more years in order not to truncate the gains made during his tenure and that of President Akufo-Addo.

He said the Awutu Senya West constituency is not ready to turn back the clock of development and expressed confidence of a peaceful win come December 7.

Meanwhile, the Awutu Senya West constituency forms part of 36 NPP held constituencies that have been flipped by the NDC in this year’s general elections.

For the presidential, supporters of the incumbent President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former President John Dramani Mahama are claiming victory as results trickle in.

Polls closed in Ghana’s Presidential and Parliamentary election at 5pm on December 7, 2020.
