Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has opened two flyovers at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra to ease traffic congestion in the city centre.
Speaking at the ceremony today, he was that confident the flyovers would bring considerable relief to motorists who ply the major road on a daily basis.
President Mahama added it will also “enable the contractor working on the project to move some of the traffic onto the two flyovers and create space to concentrate on the work remaining to be done.”
President noted that a third flyover, which is bigger than the other two is also progressing steadily and would be opened to traffic soon after its completion.
Director of Urban Roads, Raymond Ahwollu, emphasized that work on the third interchange, which will link Ring Road Central to Ring Road West, was far advanced.
Work on the loop, which would connect to the interchanges, is also near completion.
The outstanding major work is the improvement of the other roads around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, according to him.
On the whole, Mr Gatsiko said, the whole project is about 75 percent complete, and indicated that work would be completed by December, 2015, or latest January, 2016.
Engineers working on the project explained that the diversion of traffic onto the bridges would allow for work on other parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange.
The 74.88 million Euro project which started two years ago has compelled the contractor, Queiroz Galvao Construction, a leading Brazilian construction firm to create a number of diversions and relocations to ease the traffic that builds up at the busy area.
The project is being jointly financed by the Ghana government and credit from Brazil.
