Popular Ghanaian broadcaster, Kwesi Kyei Darkwa alias K.K.D the Finest will spend more days in prison following a charge of rape brought against him by the police.
Mr Darko who has been remanded into prison custody by the Kaneshie District Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday December 30 (today) will reappear on January 8, 2015.
He is alleged to have raped a 19-year-old lady in a “bathroom” of the African Regent Hotel suite in Accra.
Subsequently, KKD, popularly called in Ghana and abroad was arrested by personnel of the Airport Police Station on Saturday, December 27, for the allegedly raping the 19-year-old.
He was detained by the police over the allegation.
Earlier, counsel for the renowned broadcaster, Nana Asante Bediatuo, has told the media that allegations of sexual assault are “false and ridiculous.”
In separate interviews on two Accra-based radio stations, he asserted that his client and the woman in question were in a consensual relationship and that the claims of rape being bandied about are untrue.
According to him, the burden of proof lies on the victim, since after the alleged sexual assault, the two went outside of the bathroom, had drinks and watched a show together in the suite.
“Yes, somebody has made a rape allegation but it is actually false the story is ridiculous…It is not true that he has raped anybody. He had a consensual relationship with a woman and for some reason – I don’t know and I don’t care what her motive is – she now claims it’s rape but that is false,” he said.
“There were other people around and it’s difficult for me to understand how a person can be forced to have sexual relations and the people around won’t hear cries or shouts for help,” he stated. A “shocked” and completely “disorganized” KKD, is currently being held at the Airport police station while investigations continue, his counsel added.
On Sunday, the police made things murkier by publicly announcing that KKD was being investigated for sexual assault, an unknown offence in Ghana’s criminal justice system.
KKD was expected to be taken to court on Monday, but the police failed to do so.
The entertainment icon appeared in court Tuesday with his lawyers hoping that he would be granted bail, the court remanded him.
According to Ghanaian Constitution, rape is not a bailable offence.
Meanwhile, African Eye News.com gathered that the 18-year old daughter of KKD is expected in Ghana tonight from London, UK, while his 21-year old son won’t be able to make it to Ghana because of work.
