September 6, 2018//-The Kenya government has termed as murder the killing of pregnant university student Sharon Otieno.

The body of Rongo University student was found in a forest in Homa Bay, about 400km southwest of Nairobi, on Wednesday morning.

In a statement to newsrooms on Wednesday, Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe said Sharon died in circumstances that “distinctly point to a murder”.

Mr Kiraithe also condemned the Monday attempted abduction, which it termed as “attempted murder”, of the Nation Media Group reporter Barrack Oduor.

His abduction

The government spokesman commended Mr Oduor as a “courageous” man who was trapped in the course of work.

“It now appears that his abduction was an attempted murder,” he said.

He assured the public and the media fraternity that the matter would be expeditiously investigated.

The family

The second year student, who was pursuing a degree in Medical Records and Information at Rongo University, had been missing since Monday evening.

Sharon’s father Douglas Otieno on Wednesday confirmed to the Nation that he viewed his daughter’s body at the Oyugis Level Four Hospital in Oyugis at 1am (+3GMT).

He rushed to the hospital after police informed the family that a woman’s body had been found dumped in Kodera Forest.

A senior criminal investigations officer in Homa Bay also confirmed that the body was found in the dense forest.
