India Calls on Citizens Not to Allow Extraneous Debates to Distract Them

Accra, Ghana, August 15, 2018//-Indians and Ghanaians on Wednesday (today) converged at the Residence of the India High Commissioner in Accra to mark the 72th Independence anniversary of India, with a passionate call on Indian citizens  not to allow contentious issues and extraneous debates to distract them.

Addressing a large Indian community in Ghana, Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, Birender Singh Yadav,  who hoisted the Flag of India and later read a speech on behalf of the President of India, H.E Sri Ram Nath Kovind noted: “We are at the cusp of achieving many of our long-awaited goals”.

He added: “Universal access to electricity, the elimination of open defecation, the elimination of homelessness, the very elimination extreme poverty is achievable”.

“We are fortunate that we have inherited the legacy of such remarkable patriots. They left us with a free India, but they also left us with unfinished tasks for the development of our society, for the empowerment of the proverbial last person, for their liberation from poverty, and social and economic inequality”, Mr Kovind said.

Every breath in our collective life as a nation is a tribute to our freedom fighters and a commitment to accomplish whatever is still unaccomplished, according to him.

“Our economic and international partnerships over the past seven decades have been prompted as much by economic impulse as by the moral principles and emotional bonds. We sought a fair and equitable access to markets and resources. We fought together to make development the foundation of global trade”.

And, we worked to diversify economic partnership between countries of the South. Our doctors and teachers went to Africa not just to seek professional opportunities, but in solidarity with a common cause of development as free nations.

Today, India and Africa stand on the threshold of a future of great promise: as confident, secure, youthful, innovative, and dynamic people. Today, Africa is on the move. It is witnessing increasing gender parity, rising educational and health standards, and expanding infrastructure and connectivity.

It is a region with growing trade and investment. We are seeing a surge of innovation. We in India rejoice in every African success, because of our deep bonds of friendships.

India is proud to be Africa’s partner.  As in the past, we will continue to support the aspirations of the people of Africa– in agriculture and healthcare, education and training, infrastructure and energy, capacity building in government and training in defence.
