Ghana’s FDA Closes Chinese Firm Over Hygiene Failings

Some unhygienic items used in the preparation of the final products

Accra, Ghana, November 5, 2019//-Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has temporarily closed down Dada Foods Company over some hygiene failings at its factory at Kpone near Tema in the Greater Accra Region.
The Chinese-owned company produces New Star Drink, Dada Fruit Drink, Dada Delicious Juice Drink among others.

GBC News discovered the factory hands totaling about 40 were without protective gear while in the course of production, exposing themselves and the consumer to various risks.

While all the workers were without gloves, some were visibly captured in short pants and barefooted within the production area.

The point of ingredients-mixture was no different to a sink full of unwashed dishes. The measuring cups and spoons were rinsed in small bowl of water which has visibly turned reddish.

Even the factory hands mixing the ingredients could not identify the elements because the inscriptions on most were in Chinese.

The gloomy operating procedure at Dada Foods is no more revealing because the company failed a similar hygiene assessment conducted by the FDA in June 2019.

Following the GBC report, the FDA inspected the facility, confirmed the worrying discoveries and consequently halted production.

The regulator has since picked samples of their products for testing, to establish whether the drinks are safe for consumption.

The FDA said the company would have to correct all the anomalies and put in place a robust hygiene protocol before it resumes production.

The regulator added it will be forced to completely shutdown the factory if management fails to meet the operating standards.
