Ghana: IFEJ Launches 7th Edition of Flamingo Awards for Journalists

Accra, Ghana//-The Institute of Financial and Economic Journalists (IFEJ), today launched its seventh edition of the IFEJ Flamingo Awards for business and financial journalists in Ghana.

The 2021 edition is on the theme: ‘The Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on Business Resilience and Recovery in the Ghanaian Economy’.

This year, the Ultimate Winner must pick up the Business of Health with reference to Economics of Pandemics category and any other category.

Journalists, particularly financial and economic reporters who write comprehensive and accurate business news, are encouraged to enter the IFEJ Flamingo Awards.

Stories written from 1st February 2020 to 31st July 2021 are all qualified for the awards but the final selection is depended on the awards committee jury. Submission of articles for the awards began from today (26th August 2021 to 30th Septembe 2021, according to the Director of Programmes at IFEJ, Ms Naa Torshie Torto.

 She added that the submission of stories could be done at the IFEJ office located on the second floor of Ga Presbytery, Jubilee House at Kuku Hill Osu, Accra. Interested journalists can also download the form(s) on the IFEJ website.

The IFEJ is a non-profit organisation that seeks to provide qualitative analysis of the economic sector while offering necessary ammunition for policy redirection through write-ups by members.

Speaking at the launch, a member of the awards committee jury, Dr Rev Felix Dela Klutse said the awards would focus on key areas such as originality, accuracy, quality and excellent communication.

He added that they also would focus on quality and that would be the overall presentation of the story, the planning, angle and arrangement of the story.

The IFEJ awards which are slated for January 2022 would award journalists in the following nine categories; 

  1. Best in finance
  2. Best in Agribusiness
  3. Best in Development
  4. Best in Business/Manufacturing
  5. Best in Tourism
  6. Best in Business of Health
  7. Best in Natural Resources
  8. Best in Information Communication Technology
  9. Best in Local Economy

In a speech read for the special guest at the launch by Dr Richard Nsiah Agyemang, the Manufacturer of COA FS immune booster, Prof. Samuel Ato Duncan, noted: “The Covid-19 presented two major crises, a health and an economic and these have impacted negatively on financing the health sector. Government support to the health sector was rather channeled into fighting the pandemic”.

Dr Agyemang presented a cheque of GHC5,000.oo on behalf of Prof Duncan to the management of IFEJ towards the organisation of the awards.

While the Head of Marketing and Public Relations of the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) also pledged GHC20,000.00 towards the awards event after making few encouraging remarks about the IFEJ.

The Executive Director of the UK- Ghana Chamber of Commerce’s (UKGCC), Ms Adjoba Kyiamah who chaired the launch lauded IFEJ for promoting ethical business journalism in the country.

The President of IFEJ, Rayborn Bulley took the opportunity to thank the sponsors especially World Bank for believing in IFEJ first and supporting the ultimate award winner to cover the annual IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC, USA.
