EIU Predicts Doom for NPP, Says NDC Stands a Reasonable Chance of Winning 2024 Polls

Mahama and Akufo-Addo

Accra, Ghana//-The British Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has predicted doom for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), saying that Ghana’s largest opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) stands a reasonable chance of winning the 2024 elections.

In its latest detailed forecast, it stated: “We expect a transfer of power to the NDC in the 2024 elections, driven by anti-incumbency factors and public dissatisfaction with the current government”.

However, irrespective of who retains power, the EIU expected that policy continuity in the medium term, with a focus on improving food security, industrialisation and economic diversification.

“The new government will face similar challenges to its predecessor, but overall political stability will prevail. Public discontent with the government stems from factors such as rising prices (stoked further by the Russia-Ukraine war), unfavourable public-sector working conditions, limited economic opportunities for young people—exacerbated in part by the socioeconomic fallout from the coronavirus—and perceptions of corruption”.

The next parliamentary and presidential elections are due in 2024. Under constitutionally mandated term limits, the incumbent president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, cannot run for a third term.

“The former president, John Dramani Mahama, is reportedly considering running again, but we expect the opposition NDC to try to revitalise its prospects with a fresh candidate”. The full report: EIU-five-year-forecast-ghana-Mar2022.pdf

Reaction

However responding to the above statement, the former NDC Eastern Regional Chairman, Bismark Tawiah Boateng thinks this is a political diversion of the current economic hardships under the Akufo-Addo led administration.

The EIU latest research in his “opinion is quite statistically premature which  has no in-depth of analysis in terms of its sample size,  methodology,  mode of interview and more especially the template of questionnaire issued to the respondents not forgetting the type of statistical tools that were used in their analysis”.

Mr Boateng who is contesting the same regional chairmanship position of the party encouraged the NDC faithful and the entire Ghanaians to disregard the research as it looks petty, flimsy, and inconsistent and as such the EIU cannot dictate the fate of the party in the 2024 polls.

According to him, Mr  Mahama  is always the best and has been the best choice for Ghanaians and  therefore urged the EIU to seek the attention of  something else.
