Department of Sociology, University of Ghana Launches 75th Anniversary Celebrations

Accra, Ghana//-The Department of Sociology at the University of Ghana officially launches its 75th Anniversary Celebrations on May 29th, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the department’s distinguished history as a leader in sociological education and research in Ghana and across Africa.
To be held at the forecourt of the Sociology Department, University of Ghana, the launch ceremony will bring together faculty, alumni, students, policymakers, and key stakeholders from academia and civil society to reflect on the department’s rich legacy, examine its current impact, and chart a transformative vision for its future.

Under the theme “75 Years of Institutionalised Sociological Inquiry in Ghana” the celebrations will include a series of academic and public engagement events such as lecture series, alumni engagement, student conferences, policy dialogues, and community outreach activities.

The Department of Sociology is one of the oldest and most influential academic units at the University of Ghana, having produced generations of scholars, public servants, civil society leaders, and development practitioners since its establishment in 1950. Its commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community engagement has shaped national discourse on key issues such as social justice, gender, health, education, environment, migration, and development.

The 75th Anniversary Celebrations will run from May 2025 to December 2025.

The Department warmly invites all its alumni—both in Ghana and abroad—to join in the launch and subsequent activities as we celebrate a shared legacy and reconnect with the global Sociology@UG community.
