Canadian High Commission Supports Gender Watch 2020

October 14, 2019//-The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) has awarded the Aya Institute close to 30,000 Canadian Dollars to support one of its flagship programmes.

The programme dubbed Ghana Decides Gender Watch 2020 is targeted at training journalists and engaging women groups to participate effectively in governance.

The goal of the project is to support the participation of women in governance, particularly related to the presidential and parliamentary elections of 2020 by training 50 women trainers to build their knowledge capacities in the upcoming governance process and how they can engage in it.

They will be taken through a curriculum that provides them with information about the presidential and parliamentary elections and the ways they can play a part in it. These women will in turn train other women in their communities.

The project will again support the participation of women ingovernance processes by training journalists on gender responsive reporting with the goal to centre women’s voices and opinions on governance in their news and programmes.

The Executive Director of Aya Institute, Dr. Lawrencia Agyepong expressed gratitude to the CFLI and the Canadian government for their Feminist International Assistance Policy which has seen the Aya Institute as a beneficiary to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls as the most effective way to reduce poverty and build a more inclusive, peaceful and prosperous world.

Instructively, the CFLI supports small-scale, high-impact projects, in developingcountries. The programme is directed at projects conceived and designed predominantly by local partners.Projects are selected and approved by the relevant Canadian Embassy or High Commission.

While, the Aya Institute is engaged in research, training and advocacy for gender equality in Ghana.
