British Prime Minister Visits South Africa

Prime Minister Theresa May

August 28, 2018//-British Premier, Theresa May, arrived in Cape Town today on a working visit to South Africa, the first of a British head of government since 2011, with the aim of promoting bilateral trade.

The visit to South Africa is the beginning of a five-day tour of this continent that also includes Nigeria and Kenya.

May is accompanied by some 30 business people that include, among others, financial institutions and information technology such as Farm.ink, which established a mobile platform for the exchange of information to the agricultural sector.

Guest of President Cyril Ramaphosa, with whom she held meetings during the Commonwealth and G-7 summits, held this year in Great Britain and Canada, respectively, the premier will present the opportunities her country offers for commercial exchange in times in which Great Britain abandons the European Union, on March 29.

The press states that that power is interested in the potential of a continent with a young population that covers 16 percent of the world and only three percent of direct investments in the world.

The premier said before starting this journey that “this is the time for the United Kingdom to deepen and strengthen its global partnerships … a prosperous and growing trade with Africa is of our interest.”

The visitor will meet Ramaphosa today in Cape Town and travel tomorrow to Abuja to hold talks with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and a day later will go to Nairobi to exchange with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
