Accra, Ghana//-The CEO of Class Media Group, Alhaji Seidu Agongo, today applauded President John Dramani Mahama for confirming that the officers of the Ghana National Fire Service responsible for assaulting his journalist, Samuel Addo, at the Kasoa New Market have been interdicted as investigations into the incident continue.
He disclosed this during a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) as part of his media tour in Accra.
President Mahama condemned the attack and said violence against journalists has no place in a democratic society.
“I’m a journalist by training, and so there’s no way we can countenance the continued assault on journalists,” he stated.
President Mahama also revealed that the government has been engaging the Ghana Journalists Association and security agencies to address the matter and prevent future incidents.
“We’ve been in touch with the Ghana Journalists Association on these issues. We’ve put them in touch with the security services.”
Satisfied with the action, Mr Agongo, in a short statement, said: “This prompt action underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring media freedom and accountability within our security services.
As he stated earlier, this incident was despicable and unacceptable, insisting: “It is not just about one journalist, it is about safeguarding the integrity of our institutions and the reputation of the Ghana National Fire Service.”
Mr Agongo is confident that the government and investigative bodies will act swiftly and judiciously to ensure justice is served and reforms are implemented.
“The Class Media Group and I stand ready to support this process in any way possible through dialogue, advocacy, and initiatives that guarantee sustainable reforms for the safety of journalists and the credibility of our security services”.
Background
The Class Media Group journalist, Samuel Addo was at the Kasoa New Market in the Central Region on Sunday night, January 4, 2026, to report on the fire outbreak that was sweeping across the market.
He said he returned to the scene this morning for a follow-up report for the morning show at the radio station he was assigned to, and while there, he saw some fire officers assaulting a civilian and he took out his phone to film the incident, but some fire officers, about 10 of them, rushed on him, seized his phone and assaulted him, even though he had identified himself to them as a journalist.
According to Addo, he has complained to the police and has been issued a medical form to attend the hospital.
Together, let us protect Ghana’s hard-earned democratic credentials.
