Airtel Golf Tournament Underway At Royal Golf Club In Kumasi

MD Airtel with Otumfuo on the golf course KumasiThe Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II on Saturday officially teed off to open the 82nd Airtel Ghana Golf Open at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi.

Also teeing off to commemorate the most prestigious annual tournament was the Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, Lucy Quist.

About 150 top flight amateur golfers are taking part in the 54-hole event over three days.

This year’s competition is mainly opened to Ghana based golfers with handicap 24 and below and has Airtel Ghana sponsors for the next three years. There are representation from all of Ghana’s major golf clubs with notable names on the Ghana golf terrain taking part.

The Asantehene, an avid golfer himself, wished participants well and commended Airtel Ghana for coming on board to help grow the game of golf. He later on the opening day hosted participants to dinner at the Manhyia Palace.

Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, Lucy Quist, said Airtel’s involvement with the Ghana Open will be for the long haul adding that, “we find the game of golf as one of the strategic sports whose benefits go beyond just winning a trophy”. She said Airtel has an initial 3 year partnership agreement with the Ghana Golf Association and was happy to be part of “Ghana’s premier golf event”.

President of the Ghana Golf Association, Dr. Felix Frempong was happy with the interest shown in the competition by sponsors and players alike and was optimistic that the greens at the Royal Golf Club will make for an interesting competition.

Also included for this year is a golf skills clinic, conducted as part of the programme to introduce the sport to aspiring golfers.
