Chamber of Mines Tour: AngloGold Ashanti Worried Over Growing Threats of Illegal Mining Activities

Abraham Osei Baud, Acting Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine

Iduapriem , Western Region-//AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine in Ghana, a leading player in Ghana’s mining industry has expressed serious concerns over the growing threats of illegal mining activities, warning of significant risks to its operations and the surrounding communities in the country.

The company added that the impact of illegal mining popularly known in Ghana as galamsey poses significant risks to both its business and the environment as well.

The company expressed the views during a media engagement organized by the Ghana Chamber of Mines at Iduapriem in the Western Region of Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Acting Managing Director of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, Abraham Osei Badu, highlighted the negative effects of illegal mining activities, particularly the contamination of local water sources.

“One of the main issues is the contamination of streams around the mine’s concession. We have always kept our streams clean, but unfortunately, some of them are being tampered with from sources far from our operations, leading to contamination that eventually flows through our concession,” Mr Osei Badu explained.

Impact on Local Communities

He stressed that this contamination has severe consequences for local communities that rely on these water bodies for farming and domestic use. “Imagine someone using contaminated water to spray vegetables; it creates a health risk for the entire community. This is why we strongly oppose illegal mining activities”.

Beyond environmental degradation, Mr Osei Badu noted a growing number of thefts linked to illegal mining. Thieves often encroach on restricted areas of the mine, stealing valuable equipment crucial to operations.

Commitment to CSR

Stephen Adjei, Senior Manager of Sustainability at AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine, spoke about the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).

He revealed that AngloGold has invested significantly in the local community, particularly in health, education, water, sanitation, agriculture, and youth development.

Over the years, the company has increased its community development spending from $250,000 to $4 million. “Everything we do is aimed at empowering people and advancing society.

Educating the youth allows them to contribute meaningfully to the progress of their communities,” Adjei noted.

CSR investments

He also highlighted key CSR initiatives, including the construction of schools, hospitals, and vocational institutions to foster sustainable development in the local area.

“We are committed to leaving the community better off, investing in their future, and ensuring they can sustain themselves,” Adjei said, underscoring AngloGold’s focus on building resilient communities that can thrive beyond the lifespan of the mine’s operations”.

Calls for Government Action Against Illegal Mining

At the same event, Director of External Relations and Communication at the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ahmed Nantogmah echoed concerns about the growing impact of illegal mining on the country’s responsible mining sector.

He urged the government to strengthen enforcement against galamsey activities, particularly those that threaten water bodies and mining concessions.

Mr Nantogmah emphasized the need to distinguish between responsible mining companies, which adhere to strict Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards, and illegal miners who disregard environmental regulations.

“The narrative in the media often focuses on the negative aspects of mining, showing images of illegal mining activities when responsible miners are following the law and making significant efforts to mitigate environmental impacts,” he said.

Protection for Mining Concessions and Greater Transparency

MrNantogmah also called for better protection for legitimate mining companies, which he said play a critical role in Ghana’s economy by contributing through taxes, royalties, and employment.

He warned that allowing illegal miners to encroach on mining concessions not only harms the environment but also robs the country of valuable resources.

Mr Nantogmah  further advocated for greater transparency in how the government utilizes mineral royalties, arguing that the lack of visible community benefits often fuels negative perceptions of mining.

“When people say they don’t see the benefits of mining, it’s often because they are unaware of how the revenues are being used. We believe the government should provide more transparency in how these funds are spent,” he added.

Commitment to Responsible Mining

Both AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine and the Ghana Chamber of Mines reaffirmed their commitment to responsible mining and sustainable development. They called for stricter law enforcement and clearer communication regarding the mining sector’s contributions to national and community growth.

The media tour aims to provide media personnel with first-hand information, enabling them to analyse issues objectively and constructively. It will also offer an opportunity for them to engage with company management.
