Accra, Ghana, August 26, 2019//-Constructors in Ghana have given the Akufo-Addo-led government up to 30th August, 2019 to release as a matter of urgency all the validated payment certificates of works done for immediate payment to avoid their gruesome wrath in the country.
According to the leadership of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry GhCCI), it is giving the Government of Ghana through the infrastructural Ministries- Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Works and Housing, Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources as well as the Ministry of Finance up to 30th August, 2019 to pay them if not they would embark on nationwide demonstration.
The Chairman of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry, Emmanuel T. Martey in a statement issued in Accra, said: “The leadership of the Chamber further states that it cannot be blamed nor held responsible for any damning consequences if the authorities fail to deal with the outstanding payments although this information has been made known to the government by the Chamber on several negotiation platforms”.
To this end, the Governing Council of the Ghana Chamber of Construction Industry (GhCCI) announced to the general public that, due to the heightened tensions and consequential agitations, a looming Nation-wide demonstrations by Building and Civil Engineering Contractors, Road Contractors, Consultants, Electrical Contractors, Tipper Truck Drivers, Artisans, Architects, Surveyors, Financial Institution Workers and Suppliers for Non-Payment of works done which span over three years is imminent.
The leadership of the Chamber has over the period persuaded its members to exercise restraint. Accordingly, leadership is still appealing to all the aggrieved and affected members of the Professional Institutions, Trades and Artisanal Associations and other Service Providers in the Built Environment to remain calm and keep faith in the ongoing negotiations with the duty bearers.
The Chamber nonetheless thanked the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and by extension Ministry of Education and GETFUND for the payment responses made to some of the Contractors and Service Providers in recent times.
“We are indeed grateful for effecting payments due Building Contractors but hence want to plead further that the commitment to pay the outstanding arrears is not truncated but will continue to demonstrate the desire of good faith as a responsible government to rescue our challenged Construction Industry”
