Kofi Asare (in black) is the Chairman of the GNECC who is refusing to relinquish power

Accra, Ghana, August 22, 2019//-There is a tension at the offices of the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), following the refusal of the Chairman, Kofi Asare to relinquish the post.

Mr Asare’s eligibility was contested by the members of the Coalition at the recent general meeting on 13th August, 2019, at the University of Professional Studies, Accra.

The Coalition has a constitution that provides for qualifications for contesting elections at the National Core Executive Council level such as holding regional executive position.

What the constitution says

According to the constitution, “Eligibility to contest for the position of a national core executive council member is open only to a member of an organisation in good standing for at least three years. That person must have served as a regional executive before she/he may contest for any of the positions”.

But investigation conducted by African Eye Report revealed that the Mr Asare has never held any such position to qualify him to contest for the National chair position, let alone being the chair.

As a result, the membership called for an emergency General Assembly and voted to nullify the votes that brought him into office in 2018. So, currently he is not the chair but he is not accepting the defeat, according to impeccable sources close to the Coalition.

RESOLUTION

It was discussed and unanimously agreed at the recent general meeting, following investigations by some members of the Coalition, that Mr Asare did not meet the criteria for election to the office of Chairman of the Coalition per Article 12 of the GNECC constitution.

It became clear that he came to the office based on false information with regards to meeting the criteria provided, the resolution signed by National Coordinator of GNECC, Madam Veronica Dzeagu said.

“The General Assembly has therefore decided to nullify the election for Chairmanship position at the 2018 Annual General Meeting. This decision was confirmed by a secret ballot.

100% of members present at the meeting voted for the nullification. One delegate each signed on behalf of delegates from each of the regions present”.

Further, it was unanimously agreed that the powers of the Chairperson should be relinquished to the Vice Chair effective 13th August 2019, for the next three months pending the election of a substantive Chairperson. The Vice Chairperson, Madam Dorothy Konadu, has duly been informed. But Mr Asare is yet to relinquish the chairmanship post.

All partners should henceforth channel all communication related to GNECC through the Secretariat and the Acting Chairperson. This resolution supersedes all previous correspondence in relation to this issue, it stated.
