The Ghana Card has strengthened identity verification and inclusion nationwide, while gaining recognition across ECOWAS and internationally, according to the National Identification Authority.

Speaking at the NIA’s 20th anniversary, Executive Secretary Wisdom Kwaku Deku said the Authority has registered over 19.4 million Ghanaians aged 15 and above and issued more than 18.7 million cards. Another 229,000 foreign nationals are also on the system.

He noted the Ghana Card is now accepted as a valid travel document within ECOWAS and recognised at over 44,000 airports worldwide. The NIA’s biometric verification platform has handled more than 200 million requests successfully.

“By insisting on free issuance at the start, we removed cost barriers and ended identity silos across the country,” Deku said.

The Authority has also restarted nationwide registration for children aged 6 to 14, with over 90,000 already enrolled in the Volta and Oti regions.

Deku added that proposed amendments before Parliament would make biometric verification mandatory for transactions, aimed at improving the security and reliability of Ghana’s ID system.
