West Africa Telecom Summit Opens

Telcos in GhanaThe second edition of the West Africa Telecom Summit and Expo (WATSE) has been slated take off at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra from May 21-22, 2015.
The prestigious event, a gathering of tech-driven innovators interested in pushing the frontiers of telecom in the West African market, is once again bound to provide the platform to discuss solutions meant to facilitate social and economic development.
Telecom operators, smartphone companies, ICT service providing companies among others in the tech industry are expected to showcase and demonstrate their products and services at the grand exhibition.
Dubbed ‘Broadband: Driving Economic Growth in West Africa’, the Summit is expected to address some topical issues across the region with special emphasis on dynamics, forecasts, future trends and expected developments in the industry.
The Group Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of MobileWorld Magazine, Mr. Akin Napthal, commenting at the launch of the event in Accra last Thursday, said Broadband networks have indeed profoundly changed the socio-economic climate in the sub-region.
However, he argued that the broadband divide was still wide compared to the rest of the world, a situation he noted, ought to be bridged in the sub-region’s quest for growth.

“While sub-Saharan Africa has been very successful in increasing access to basic voice communications, and Africa’s rapid adoption of the mobile phone is quickly closing the ‘digital divide’ in voice services, the broadband access gap between the region and the rest of the world is getting wider. WATSE 2015 will provide a compelling environment to discuss broadband as the new frontier for economic
growth in West Africa”, he said.

Seasoned speakers and experts for this year’s Summit are expected to deliberate on the landscape of the telecommunications industry and critical industry related topics and trends currently affecting the
telecommunications development.
The Summit, according to Mr. Napthal, will also deliver thought-provoking insights from the prime movers of the industry and give delegates the opportunity to hear and networked with them in a
structured atmosphere of panel discussion.
