VODAFONE Ghana and Tigo in the month of August, 2014 recorded massive drop in their subscriber bases, while fellow rivals recorded increases.
This is according to the National Communications Authority’s monthly Mobile Voice subscription statistics.
According to the telecommunications industry regular, Vodafone recorded a figure 6,688,783 at the end of August 2014 indicating a drop of 60,721 in its subscriber base.
Similarly, Tigo recorded a decrease in their subscriber base to end the month under review with a figure of 4,015,946.
The Director General of the NCA, Paarock Vanpercy blamed the drop on the telecom service providers on poor network challenges which subscribers punished them for the poor service.
He noted that MTN Ghana, as at the time of data compilation, was the highest gainer in August 2014 with 110,042 new Mobile Voice subscribers to a total 13,541,961 in that month bringing its market share to 53.12%.
Following closely was Airtel Ghana which gained 97,016 subscribers to end August 2014 with a total figure of 3,756,547, bringing its market share to 14.14%.
Glo experienced an increase of 35,711 in their subscriber base to end the month under review with 1,404,426, while its market share stands at 4.00%.
Expresso also showed an increase in their subscriber base from July’s 122,356 to end August 2014 at 123,825. The network operator ended the month with 0.25% market share.
Overall, Mobile Voice subscriber base figures for the country increased from 29,369,237 at the end of July, 2014 to 29,531,488 as at the end of August 2014.
