Vodafone Ghana Trains More Female Engineers

SAMVodafone Ghana limited has commended and awarded five females from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) for their courage to pursue engineering courses and also to emerged as best students in their field of study.

The five engineering female students, Joycelyn Aduakye, GTUC, Edith Ghunney, KNUST, Naa Korkor Adjoa Ghunney, KNUST, J’ezkella Afoakwah, KNUST, and Rebekah Nhyira Bedford, GTUC, academic user fees were paid for by Vodafone.

Other incentives offered are electronic gadgets, modems, free airtime, and stationery to help them in their research projects.

Vodafone Communication provided this gesture as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Female Engineering Students Sponsorship Programme (FESSP).

The Vodafone Communication expressed the gesture was also plans to bring gender diversity in the technological world which women ratio is so low.

The Red brand company gave the awards at its head office in Accra, yesterday.

Vodafone Ghana Human Resource (HR) Director, Stella Agyemin Boateng said the initiative was designed to discover young graduates, especially female to develop their talents and confidence.

According to her the ratio of ten male to one female in engineering was discouraging, adding that the disparity, would not come about the gender diversity that the country and world is anticipating to achieve.

“Diversity and inclusion is our topmost apriority. We actually want to give every woman the opportunity to excel” she stated.

She stressed that the programme give opportunity to fresh graduates to undertake industrial internship and National Service with Vodafone and those who excel are employed.

“These young ladies are brilliant and are full of potentials, all they need is a push and that is what we are doing. At Vodafone we allow them to explore, ask questions and allow them to be very visible,” the HR director added.

She said each year the telecommunication company awards scholarship to 10 females who are studying Mathematics, science and technology at University of Education, Winneba.

She indicated that the idea is to get female teachers equipped and capacitated for the task ahead, so as they can impact their students with the knowledge they have acquired.

Mrs Boateng promised that the company bent on sustaining the programme to benefit a lot more females who would take the challenge to study engineering.

Female Engineering Students Sponsorship Programme was initiated in 2011 and most beneficiaries had gain employment with Vodafone Ghana.
