Accra, Ghana – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy in Ghana, in collaboration with the Emirates Red Crescent, launched its annual Ramadan Food Boxes and Hot Meals Distribution at the Accra Regional Mosque in Abossey Okai.
The initiative aims to support vulnerable communities during the holy month of Ramadan and alleviate food insecurity in Ghana.
Speaking at the launch, Mr. Elijah Amoo Addo, Executive Director of Food for All Africa, emphasized the organization’s commitment to reducing food waste, hunger, and poverty.
“At Food for All Africa, we’re always looking for partners who share our vision. As part of our core responsibility, we help coordinate the sourcing of food ingredients and identify the most deserving beneficiaries for programs like today’s donation.
Ramadan is a time when vulnerable members of the Muslim community face additional challenges in accessing food, and we are committed to supporting them,” he stated.
Mr Addo revealed that the initial target for this year’s project was to assist 1,050 beneficiaries. However, thanks to the support of the UAE Embassy and the Emirates Red Crescent, the initiative now aims to reach around 10,000 people across the country.
In addition to food boxes, cash assistance will also be provided to vulnerable communities through the Livelihood Improvement Program (LIP), which will benefit not only the Muslim community but also other marginalized groups.
Mikdad Mohammed, Senior Economic Advisor at the UAE Embassy, noted that the initiative has been a long-standing tradition for the UAE Embassy in Accra, which has been supporting less privileged communities during Ramadan for the past eight years.
“This year, due to the economic challenges faced by the community, we have expanded our efforts. Over a thousand food boxes are being distributed today, each containing enough supplies for an entire household.
In addition, we will extend this initiative to Kumasi, a city with a large Muslim population, and further assist vulnerable communities throughout Ghana,” he explained.
Mr Mohammed also highlighted the UAE Embassy’s broader humanitarian efforts, stating that the embassy’s activities extend beyond Ghana, reaching as far as Togo, where similar support is being provided in collaboration with the respective governments.
The launch event underscored the importance of partnerships in addressing food insecurity and providing support to communities in need. It showcased the spirit of compassion and solidarity that defines the holy month of Ramadan.
