Togo Hosts International Summit Against False Drug Trafficking in Africa

Lomé, Togo, January 14, 2020//- A high-level summit dedicated to the fight against the trafficking and consumption of fake medicines in Africa opens from Friday 17 January in Lome.

This two-day meeting is organized by the Togolese government in partnership with the Brazzaville Foundation, a non-profit independent organization based in the United States.

Besides President Faure Gnassingbe of Togo (host of the summit), six other heads of state of the continent (Congo, Ghana, Gambia, Niger, Senegal), as well as leading figures from the medical world, including the Director General wHO are expected in Lome in the framework of this meeting which will lead to the signing of a legally binding framework agreement to fight against this scourge that kills almost 900,000 Africans each year, including 120,000 children under five years.

The Lomé Agreement will lead the seven signatory countries to create legislation to criminalize trafficking in imposing severe penalties, adhere to existing international agreements and strengthening services and law enforcement.

Other African countries are encouraged to join the initiative supported by the Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe had on December 20, in an article, compiled the situation and called for a general mobilization against the phenomenon. “It is time to act,” Faure Gnassingbe had hammered.

Recall that the Brazzaville Foundation will play a key role in the implementation of the decisions that come out of this meeting. She will be responsible for monitoring, coordinating and consulting to ensure the implementation of legislation criminalizing trafficking in fake medicines in different African countries.
