Tigo, Expresso Lose Grounds On Rivals

 Telcos in GhanaTWO telecom operators, Tigo and Expresso have recorded significant losses in the latest National Communications Authority (NCA)’s report on mobile voice subscription in Ghana.

The report which covered the month of September witnessed all the four mobile operators namely MTN, Tigo, Airtel, and Glo made gains, while Tigo and Expresso dropped subscribers.

These drops could be blamed on networks’ challenges.

According to the report, as at the end of September, this year, Tigo’s market share decreased to 13.46%, bringing its subscriber base to 4,012,580 from 4,015,946 in August.

While Expresso’s subscriber base also decreased to 120,108 in September 2014 from 123,825 ending the month of August with a market share percentage of 0.40%.

The biggest telecom operator MTN, witnessed some level of growth in its subscriber base.

Its subscriber base increased to 13,546,678,from 13,541,961 pulling on 4,717 new subscribers.

This gave MTN a market share of 45.44% for the month of September.

MTN’s biggest rival Vodafone also made some impressive gains.

It increased its market share from 22.65% to 23.04% for the month under review.

Its subscriber base increased to 6,870,233 from 6,688,783.

As at the end of September, Airtel had also increased its market share to 12.71% to end September 2014 with a subscriber base of nearly 3.8 million people.

Glo’s market share also increased to 4.95% this reflected in its subscriber base which is now of 1,474,988.

It added close to 44 thousand new subscribers for the period under review.

Overall, the report mobile Voice subscriber base in Ghana grew from 29,531,488 as at the end of August 2014 to 29,815,213 as at the end of September 2014.
