Accra, Ghana, September 3, 2019/-One issue that has and continues to agitate the mind of policy makers is when a worker must be sent home from his service to the nation.
In other words, when must workers be retired?
Many workers believe the 60 years in Ghana is just to make way for others as certain hands are given one or two years thereafter to assist in serious places where replacements are not immediately available.
According to Kofi Nuako, Medical Practitioner in the United States of America, the mandatory retirement should be modified. They might have pension accrual stop at age 60 to save money and get some people to quit but Ghana needs Human Resources.
He disclosed that, “Practically all my Medical School classmates in Ghana are retired. Those in England will do so within 5 years but I do not know of any in the US who have done so.
With 1 doctor for 300 people the US complains of a physician shortage and in Ghana we have dozens of doctors on mandatory retirement who could have five to 10 years of service hired only on the goodwill of others or in private sector”.
Edward Mensah Owusu, Security Analyst , towing Dr Nuako’s line poses the question, “Why should companies recruit people over 50 for senior and responsible positions if not because they are more productive than those below 50!”
He explains that a study in America found that, “the most productive age in a man’s life is 60 – 70; from 70 – 80 is the 2nd most productive age; while the 3rd most productive age is 50 – 60.”
“The average age of a Nobel Prize winner is 62; the average age of a Chief Executive Officer in a Fortune 500 company is 63; the average age of the pastors of the 100 biggest churches in America is 71; and, the average age of Pope’s is 76”, he noted. To him t he above examples show that God has designed that the best years of a man’s life are 60 – 80.
In a 2008 article in the Journal of Psychological Science in the Public Interest, researchers charted the range of cognition—or how well people’s brains can function—at various ages, and found out that the potential for high-functioning brain activity peaked in the 50s but remained high until the 90s and functional into the 100s.
A study published in New England journal of Medicine in 2018 found out that at 60 you reach your peak of potential and continue up to 80. This shows that if a person is between 60 – 70, or 70-80, they have the best and second best years of their life.
