Telco CEOS Defy Hot Weather to Mark 5th Anniversary of Telecom Chamber

The Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of telecom operators and tower companies on Wednesday defied the hot weather to launch the fifth anniversary of Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications (GCT) at Kaneshie Market in Accra.

The CEOs were Mr Ebenezer Asante (MTN Ghana), Ms Roshi Motman (Tigo Ghana), and Ms Yolanda Cuba (Vodafone Ghana). While Airtel Ghana CEO was represented by Richard Ahiable, Head of Corporate Communications of the company.

In his welcome address, the CEO of Chamber, Mr Kwaku Sakyi-Addo said the event was actually about their subscribers to give them feedback so that the telcos can improve and serve them even better.

“That is the reason why we chose the Kaneshie market to interact with the traders our subscribers and the general public”, he started.

Mr Sakyi-Addo   used the occasion to educate the market traders about the various services provided by the telecom companies in the country.

He provided them with helpful information about how to secure their mobile money wallets, while encouraging more of them to sign up for the service.

Mr Sakyi-Addo assured that the mobile money service being offered by MTN, Tigo and Airtel are safe, convenient, and easy to transact all kinds of businesses with. He however advised them not share their mobile money Personal Identification Number (PIN) with anybody or risk losing their deposits.

The Chamber CEO also expressed the need for customers to register their SIM cards urgently in accordance with the National Communications Authority’s regulations or risk losing their numbers.

Mr Sakyi-Addo also appealed to Ghanaians to be more accepting of telecom towers in their communities because that is what carries the telecom services to them. More so, the towers are not harmful to people, according to him.

The Chamber was launched five years ago in November by then Vice-President now President John Mahama has enabled key stakeholders such as the government, industry regulators and lawmakers to engage the telecom operators and towers companies to champion the growth and development of the country’s telecom sector.

This has led to the exponential growth of all the sub-sectors of the telecom industry over the last five years, while millions of people were employed by the industry for the past five years, Mr Sakyi-Addo stated.

“There are few industries that have such an intravenous effect on everyone whilst impacting the national economy as well as the mobile industry”, he added.

In congratulatory message, the Director of Consumer and Corporate Affairs  of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Nana Defie Badu thanked the Chamber for its efforts at helping to speed up the growth of the industry.
